I am trying to get a new prop and wanted some help. On the rubber hub it has 391668 and 14x13 so assuming that is the right prop, do I have to go with the same part number?

I have an 1983 GTX 18. It weighs approximately 1400+ the engine + fuel + people and gear so easily 2000. This prop that is on it is damaged but it still runs about 3400 RPM. I have no idea the top speed as I do not have a speedo or GPS yet. I also have some other issues with the wires and rectifier. (I believe it is shot as I did not charge the batteries last time I was out and have had this happen twice before).

So should I go with this same size prop? If so, should I go with this same model, i.e., can I get a different brand? If so, how would I know it has a compatible hub? Looking on ebay I find a 391668 prop for $100 and there are other 14x13 but all I know is that I need a 13 spline hub. I'm not sure what else I need to look for. Any help would be appreciated as I am new to this.

I'm not sure where to get the wires and rectifier, but hoping those will solve the issue I have with spark plugs fouling and batteries not charging.

THANKS!

aviator79,

Was the prop operating the boat fine before it was damaged?
What was the max RPM's you were able to achieve with the original prop?

That prop just doesn't sound right to me.
You 18' GTX has the same hull as the Outrage 18', just a different interior.

Here are the props I have for my 1985 Evinrude 150 on my Outrage 18',
15 1/ 2 x 15______#391535
15 x 17__________#391200
14 1/ 2 x 19 SST__#389924

I believe your WOT (Wide Open Throttle) should have max RPM's between 4500 and 5500 with the correct prop.

As far as parts and the charging system, you can look up parts on BRP Online Parts Catalog.

Do not run an outboard with a damaged propeller. To do so will result in a damaged outboard.

If you are only able to get to 3400 RPM, you have serious engine trouble, Do NOT try to decide what prop to use until you resolve your engine trouble.

A 13" pitch prop on a GTX 18 is far too little. That boat and motor should be running a 17" or 19" pitch prop.

You do not need to use an OMC propeller on that motor, You can use any brand of propeller you want so long as it is hubbed for OMC/BRP.

SORRY I MENT 5400rpm!
Now that the engine is running and charging good with the new plugs wires and rectifyer I need, but am not sure what to go with still.

I know not to use the damaged prop. I have only used it a little but it is not damage too bad, but will not use anymore.

Im thinking a 13.25x17 as this is not exactly a 'light' runabout so I think a 19 will be too much...

Thanks for the replies. I never got an e-mail but I will make sure I stay subscribed now.

The guy from turning point props and other places I have seen online do say the 14x13 is for a houseboat/pontoon boat for a motor this size. He was saying it should be a 19 or 21 pitch.

However if I am running at 5600 RPM now at max throttle if I switch to a 19 or 21 pitch, wouldnt that bring my RPM down too low?

Yes but with the bad wires and rectifyer I dont think it is a fair comparison. It was runing about the same speed when I was on all 4 cylinders, but was fouling plugs and killed my battery a couple of times.

5400RPM, but the tach did not allways work due to a bad connection to the ground on the motor.

I wish I had a 150...
Thats good to know about the hull.
So is 4500RPM ok or is higher better?
If I get a 13.25x19 and it runs the motor at 4600 RPM is that no good?
I wish I had a bunch to test and a GPS to get speed (I have the later) but I cant afford to buy 3 differnt props.

So I am going to go pickup this from the local bait shop for $140 and I figure it should make me run at 5200rpm. Also going to get some evinrude hydraulic fluid as I the engine got stuck up last time I was out.

Where do I get a manual for this engine?
