Well, had my first offshore trip last weekend. Took the outrage with another 2003 18 foot Whaler so we would have our own tow if necessary, which it was not. Had a great time and the 22 outrage certainly showed the difference in the hulls. The 18 is a much wider boat and didn't take the 3 to 5 footers as well as mine did. We left them way behind on the way home in 1 to 3 footers. So, first trip a success, and looking forward to many more trips farther out in the near future.

Wahoo.........

The 22' has a very nice ride. The classic 25' is even better but then more fuel, bigger engine(s), etc.

Sounds like a great trip and you caught dinner too.

Duf,
I have to disagree. the 22 is 3 inches wider than the 18, but when looking at 3 to 5 footers, that means nothing. It's the fact the 22 is almost 4 feet longer than the 18 that gets it up and over the waves, or allows it to cut thru better.

Sounds like you had great tima, and dinner looked pretty good too.

good job, but you should have no problem running farther in your boat, we ran 40mi last weekend out of va beach where i live in my 17 sport, 10 miles here is not considered offshore, but wish we could catch what you caught, not having to run so far......

Duf, good to see your out there ! Go farther next time the fish get bigger ! The crew and I launched in P-town Friday spent the day on Stallwagen Bank the fish we saw were huge 40-50 feet (whales) ! The old girl handled the 4-5 foot swells like a champ. Call me when you get local,Jim

Duf,

Nice King! I was offshore Friday and Saturday....beautiful blue water. Saw a small marlin working a weedline. Caught kings, dolphin and red snapper.

Let's get several boats together and head out soon.

Way to go Duf! You will have a lot of fun in your 22 in the ocean.

We had my 22 out in the ocean a couple of weeks ago. We only had to run to just outside the bar and a little north to find the fish. I was really grateful that we did not have to run out- you know, the fuel cost thing.

We have routinely run 15-25 miles and further on occasion. Keep a sharp eye on the weather and make sure you can trust your equipment. Its a great time.

Doug

kamie,

I believe duf mentioned the 18' was a 2003 model.
Not sure if he got the year correct but there is a much heavier Outrage 18' in 1999 and 2000 that has the Accu-Trac hull.

At the bottom of the above link you will see the newer model.

Joe,

I agree that the late 90's boat has a beam of nearly a foot wider than Duf's 22 and will make the boat rock but given that, I would still say that having a boat 4 feet longer will help you smooth out the waves better. Especially in 3 to 5 footers.

kamie,

I'm not arguing with you here. Just pointing out that the Outrage 18' he was referring to has the Accu-Trac hull... Much different.

I had a 1997 Outrage 17' II with the Accu-Trac hull. Took the rough water quite a bit better than my 1985 Outrage 18'. That's all I am saying.....

Joe,
no argument there, when faced with even steady 2+ footers, having a heavier boat and an accu-trac hull would be sweet. Now on flat water, the sports car feel of the older 18's is not a bad ride.

I'll get with my buddy and double check the year of his center console and i found one picture which shows his boat, so more to come. Jim, looking forward to heading to Conn either in Oct or Nov, so will surely contact you and hopefully hook up, (especially in Oct, as i know it will be a tad chilly in Nov, at least up there!). Doug, appreciate the comments and now that i've had her out will definately be taking her at least 30 to 40 miles off, as that seems to be where the fish are. Another buddy of mine has been killin the Mahi Mahi every weekend about 40 miles out, and we plan on routinely hooking up. John, same deal, soon as i get back from my next trip, which i will not return from until 6 Aug, will call you and coordinate a trip.

Sure am lovin this boat!!!!! Lots of great comments on her and rides the waves like a dream. I'll do better with the picture taking next time too!! Grin

Joe, seems like you have fixed the attaching pictures thingie, WTG!!

Joe, you were correct. My buddies boat is a 1999 model, which explains the added width.

Duf - Nice king. We are closing on the Port A place a week from Thursday! I will be down through that weekend moving in and fishing. Return home and head back down for 4 days the following Thursday. Lets try to connect again that was fun. I will have the Montauk with me on these trips.

Sounds good Rob. Perhaps you, John (TexasWhaler) and myself can get together for a 30 - 40 offshore run. As i said in my previous post, i'm outta here till the 6th of Aug, but hopefully will have no more trips till i head to Conn in (hopefully) Oct, and if not then for sure in Nov for Thanksgiving at my Moms.

John, only YOU would notice that. I looked at that picture a few times and didn't notice the guy standing there. Too funny.

Duf, it takes a character like John to notice something like that. LOL.

Yeah, well with a great picture of a King, actally the smaller of the two we got, and a great picture of another Whaler in the gulf in the early morning light, it is a bit bothersome what John focused on. But then again, each to their own. Shock

Duf - May not be closing in a week. Talked to the builder yesterday and having some issues that may take some additional time. Sad I will keep you posted on dates after the 6th.
