I just bought a 1997 15' Dauntless and want to put in a stereo and 2 speakers. Can I mount the speakers in the side gunnel or are they solid and not able to run the wires?
Thanks, Garen

The gunnel is a sandwich of fiberglass (inside and outside) with foam inbetween. There is no void.
I would not mount speakers in this location.
The general locations include the console (front/sides/back) or in a location where you can access it from behind.

Hi Garen,
If you can only mount two speakers choose a model that can bridge the out puts together. With the model I purchased, thought I could just connect them together but no..... per the tech support people.
All models come with four channels today. The model I chose was a 25 X 4 channel Pyle Marine series with a remote, iPod connector, and MP3 and play back (but who burns mp3 disks...) I also did not want to mess with amplifiers
So I added a second pair of speakers.
Good luck

Garen, please keep this thread alive with your progress on installing the stereo. This is something i want to do also and would love to see your progress. Photos would also be cool.

How was this installation or is it on-going?
I'd love to have some input even on this old thread.
I think about this problem constantly as I completed the radio and fish-finder install.
I do have the driver seat box to mount the speakers into but haven't thought about the wiring issues fully.
Does anyone have any photos or examples/advice for 2001 (approx models too) Dauntless installs of speakers and the player?

Ah I put my speakers in 2 years ago in my 95 15ft Dauntless.
Put 2 Kenwood 6-1/2's in and a kenwood reciever which I've been through 2 recievers due to the damp location does anyone know of a company that makes a totally waterproof unit?
Speakers are KFC-1652 Beautiful Sound Used a 6in Diameter hole saw to cut them in easy and worked out perfect!
Going on vacation soon and I don't store my boat at my current home so won't be able to get pics for a few weeks.

I'd love to know where you placed the speakers. The radio I'm not so concerned about.
I suppose standard is positioning a pair into the side walls but I hate to cut into her.
Does it sound any good out in the big wide air?
Do people really use the stereo or is it just another gadget to add?
Is this just noise pollution so you end up not using it anyway?
I know this might be rather oblique request but does it make sense to add a stereo in the first place if the consensus is that it gets little use.
Interested to hear.
Cheers Mark

My Montauk had a stereo which only got used when we had the kids out at the lake for water sports. When I went fishing it never got used. Last year at this very time I was making a long water run and camping in a very isolated location for 5 days. I needed all the unneeded weight to go away since we had so much gear -- needless to say the radio came out. Since then we just throw a portable in when we go to the lake. It sure did clean up my console as well. I assure the fish do not miss the tunes!

I really use the stereo when out fishing put in a cd and it works nice. I put them both in the center console in the bank facing me I know they are close together but they do sound very good.

I use the stereo on the 18 because when I sing, the fish stop biting. I have 4 speakers, 2 in the CC facing aft and then 2 attached to the sidewalls next to the rod racks.

My plan is to install a small stereo with two speakers into my new console.....whenever I get around to building it. We anchor in the lake a lot so the kiddoes can swim.....music would be nice.

I still think this is going to be the best radio you can install in your boat - the one you can take out without leaving holes.

Rechargeable and you can set it on the beach areas when you park to party.

Those are some great answers! Petty much covering every request!
The boom box does trump all when you can either leave it behind or schlepp it to the beach.
Lots to still think about but thanks everyone for the locations of speakers and everything else.
I'm moving on to a more pressing issue before the stereo, the second battery (Blue Sea Add-a-battery).

Hey Rob, where can you get a cool Dewalt radio like the one pictured? That radio might just be the answer to my "Lack of tunes in my 13' " problem.

Cliff - I am pretty sure you local Home Depot would have these as well. They have them at Home Depot Online for $139.00. I bet you could find a better deal by google Search. There are quite a few on eBay right now as well.
