I have a 1982 35 Evinrude. After getting the boat out 7 year storage, it runs great however it will not always turn off immediately when you turn the key off. It will sometimes run for 3 or 4 seconds before finally stopping. Is this a bad ground or possibly in the switch.

Does the engine run smoothly after you turn the key to the off position or does it sputter a bit before you shut it down? If it's still running smoothly, then I would suspect a bad ground. However if it is sputtering, you may be experienceing a little pre-ignition which is bad.

Seems like Binkie just had that same problem. Look a few threads or even pages back and see if you can find it. He may have a solution for you.

CES is on track, if it runs smoothly it's most likely due to a fault in the grounding circuit.

To test this, conect a length of wire to the M terminal on the start switch that has the black/yellow wire connected to it. When you turn off the switch to stop the engine, immediately touch the other end of the wire to the negative post of the battery and if the engine stops right away each time, the fault is in that circuit, most likely the switch.

thanks for tips, It does run smooth after you turn it off ( as though you hadn't touched the key) I had cleaned all the grounds on the motor and sprayed the switch with a contact cleaner. Hadn't thought about a jumper Thanks

inside the controls on the back of the switch i have found an extra black w/ yellow stripe wire, i say extra as i can't any place for it or anywhere that it may have broken from and with the not wanting immediately kill with key, does this wire go anywhere or has someone tinkering around (or is this my illusive ground to kill the motor). the other black w/ yellow stripe coming from the switch goes back into the harness

That wire is your problem. It should be hooked up to the switch I believe.

Take a look at this wiring diagram.

The black w/ yellow stripe wire is coming from the switch there are a total of two coming from the same connection pole on the switch, one of the wires goes to the harness and back toward the motor the other is unconnected inside the control unit.
Thanks,

Do you have a safety lanyard switch on your control? If so, can you see the wiring? Could be meant for that... bypassed possibly?

Here is how the switch is wired on an OMC...

C = Choke or Primer
S = Start
M = Magneto
A = Accessory
M = Magneto
B = Battery

Those 6 connections correlate with the wiring diagram I gave above in a link for the wiring harness and the key switch.
There are 8 wires in the older Red Plug style wiring harness. The other 2 are for Tach = Gray wire and Tan = Warning Horn...

We have a white OMC side mount control from the 80's that has a safety lanyard switch on it, though none of the schematics I've seen show it in the circuit...
