I have a 1972 BASS BOAT 16 and want to repower it. Does it take a short shaft or long shaft?

Harry,
That can be a trick question. The early 13's had a really short transom and as far as I know are the only ones that take a 15" short shaft. For the later 13's the transom is higher and they take a 20" long shaft. That is misleading in that there are longer shafts for other boats. There are 25" and I'm not sure what else. I'd say measure your transom height and that should give you a place to start.

17's all take a long shaft (20 inches),
18's and above for the most part take an xtra long shaft (25 inches) for a single or long shaft twins

The Bass Boat 16 takes a 20" (long) shaft outboard motor. The Montauk takes a 20" shaft as well as all the other 16'-7" Whaler models.

Though irrelevant to the shaft length question, if you have a Bass Boat model then you do not have a Montauk. Which model of Whaler do you have?

It is a 1972 Bass boat that I was led to believe was a Montauk hull with a casting platform front and rear. The one I have is molded fiberglass platforms. I don't think that they can be removed very easily. I believe that they would have to be cut out the serial number is BWCA52391272
