I just bought this '77 Montauk and have a question on what I should do about the battery location. The console and RPS have been replaced. It is my understanding that the original configuration had the gas tank(s) under the RPS, and the battery in the console. Correct?

The RPS in the boat now is an enclosed box-type that is water proof and has room for storage of life jackets and such (so not tank there anymore). The previous owners put the gas tank in the console along with the battery. For obvious reasons I'm worried about a spark in there with the gas tank.

My thought was to put the battery in a box and be done with it, but every box I've looked at so far is ventilated, and a ventilated box would defeat the purpose of having a box since a possible spark would still be exposed to the ambient console "gas fumes." Should I move the battery to the rear of the boat in a box? Find a completely sealed battery box that maybe can vent to a remote location? Or should I alter the current RPS and put the gas tank in there? What are your thoughts?

Montauk77,

NO...... The original battery location was in the stern corner on the floor. Yes, the fuel tanks were under the RPS...

Because floor space is at a premium on a Montauk, many people moved the battery to the console.
My 1978 Montauk had 2 twelve gallon tanks under the RPS and 2 batteries in the console along with the Oil tank. Yes, that doesn't leave much room in the console but the deck was clear. I kept the life jackets and the anchor in the forward locker... That's about all the room you can expect from a Montauk.... I enjoyed the boat for 15 years the way it was setup...

yes Joe, space is a premium thats for sure. Any Thoughts on what I should with the battery leave it in there? Does anyone else have their gas tank in the console?
