I just received my new 360 degree stern light with brackets. Expensive little jewel! I would like to try to place this in the actual OEM factory position, but after looking at tons of photos and forum posts, I don't honestly know where that was.

Where on the hull did the wiring for the stern light come mounted out of the factory, on the side or along the back? My wiring is down the port side rubrail. Is that correct?

Took me awhile to figure out what a 360 is....

Stern Light...... All-Around Stern Light.... 360ยบ Stern Light....

If you wiring is on the port side then your stern light was most likely mounted on the port side of the transom. Do you see any filled holes in that area? There should be 2 holes for the upper mounting bracket and 2 holes for the lower mounting bracket.
Here is a photo of the brackets.

Just in case you want more "assistance" he he!

Here is a photo of the brackets installed on my Montauk.

The knurled nut goes on the top and the bottom bracket is angled. I would insert the pole into the brackets to ensure proper orientation.

I got a PDF file from a dealer showing the original position of the stern light.

PDF - Portable Document File
OEM- Original Equipment Manufacturer
360- 360 degree stern mounted Coast Guard approved white pole mounted navigation light

Sorry about the shorthand. These are pretty standard terms in the lexicon of boatbuilding. Angry
According to what I received, the light mounts are screwed to the stern wall, while the terminal block is mounted in close proximity to the exit hole for the wire running under the rubrail along the port side. I'll get mine installed and get a photo up of it.

There appears to be a wide variation in how this is handled by owners. Photos show all kinds of mounts with all kinds of hardware, light poles, etc, in all kinds of positions. Having spent the money to purchase that Whaler post and the Whaler mounts, which ran into the hundreds of dollars by the way, I was simply looking for guidance as to what was actually the standard mount position. I found it.

CBO. Yours looks pretty darn close. Thanks for the photo.

It is not owners that have been inconsistent in where the stern light mounts but the Whaler themselves. While the stern light in all small classic Whalers has always mounted to the inside of the transom, Whaler has put the stern light on both the port and starboard sides over the years. I have never found a rhyme or reason for this.

What also often happens is an owner decides to mount a kicker motor on the side where the factory placed the stern light. The stern light is often moved to accommodate the kicker.

If the wiring in your boat comes down the port side from the rub rail then that is her the light was mounted. My 1988 Montauk also had the stern light mounted to port originally.

In 1977 Whaler routed the wiring for the stern light from the tunnel to the terminal block along the floor in front of the splashwell. By the mid 1980 they had moved that route to the near the top edge of the splashwell so as to help keep it from getting stepped on. There are usually two or three small screw holes that were used to mount very small Perko line support straps.

The terminal block was usually mounted to the side of the hull literally covering the holes where the wire to the bow light emerges from the hull after being drilled through from the rub rail receiver track.

The mounting hardware for the stern light mounts with the upper fitting and knurled nut centered about three inches below the top of the transom. The lower fitting is 3-1/2" below that.

Tom
do we have any pics of the perko support straps in place?? That would explain the 2 holes near my splash well on my 1991 Montauk.

If you look at page 13 of the 1984 Boston Whaler catalog you can see a Montauk with the stern light mounted to port with the wires running along the floor.

By 1988 the stern light was back over to the starboard side. See page 23 of the 1988 Boston Whaler catalog.
