My grandfather bought a 20' whaler last night (I think it's a '79). A member of the woodworking forum that I belong to suggested that the wood on the whaler may be mahagony rather than teak (My grandfather said it was teak.) The question is, did the '79 whalers have mahagony or teak. If mahagony, what would be the prefered way to refinish?
It depends. What model of 20' Whaler did your grandfather buy?
Most, but not all, of the woodwork on a 1979 Outrage 20 or Revenge 20 would be teak (like the gunwale boards and console doors), but some parts, like the interior hatch covers in the cuddy of the Revenge model are mahogany plywood.
You can either oil or varnish the teak parts of a Whaler.
