Hello. I have a 1966 13' Classic BW and the steering arm assembly snapped on me at the beginning of May. What I am looking for is the mount, exhaust assembly and lower unit for this motor. My power head is in excellent working order. The specifications for my motor are:

1986 40 HP Yamaha outboard
15 inch short shaft
Engine S/S: 40ESJ

Basically I need everything except the power head.

As an alternative, does anyone think I should scrap the repair effort and look for a new (to me) short shaft motor? Should I put a 5 inch jack plate on it and put a 20 inch shaft motor on her? Does anyone have a 15 or 20 inch shaft, 40 HP motor for sale?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks.
Cliff

I think you should scrap the whole boat. Just tell me which dumpster it's in.Grin

By the way I'm still looking down here.

Cliff,

Here is the phone number for someone from Baton Rouge that was selling a non-running 1987 50hp Yamaha on ebay . He ended the auction early so he might still have it or know of another one.

Hey Cliff,

You may want to try your luck with the yamaha forum, someone may have a lead for you now....Shock http://www.yamahaoutboardparts.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

Aside from that, ebay would probebly be your best source for parts. I have purchased many spare parts for my 90 Yamie, complete power trim ($60) to a switch box...

I think your real issue will be finding a short shaft, not many 40's made with short shaft.

One other thought, how about having the part welded. I had a damaged streeing arm on 25 HP welded worked fine...

Good luck

Thanks guys.

I found a used midsection housing that appears to be in flawless condition from a guy in MN who prides himself on corrosion free items that are freshwater use only. I bought the midsection and will bolt my power head to it. Next step is go repair or replace my lower unit. The guy in MN was a little pricey on his lower unit so I may just pay to get mine repaired instead. If anyone wants to know who the guy is in MN who has great used outboard motor parts for sale....I will send you his information. He seems pretty reasonable on some things too.

Cliff,

What ever happened to the part you ordered from Yamaha?

I would not mind having the contact information from the guy in MN....my 1995 Yamaha 90hp might need parts one day.

Sure, no problem.

Northland Performance, Keewatin MN. Phone #: 218-778-6166 and the guys name is Pete. They deal with a lot of parts from Northern Minnesota and Canada whish is cold fresh water......minor to no corrosion.

Give them a call...

To answer the part question, I recieved tha part by my Yamaha was in such poor shape due to corrosion, I ended up breaking a few bolts and also the cavitation plate. In fact, though I have all five bolts out of the lower unit that holds in onto the midesection, the lower unit still will not come loose. I have not had this problem before with other motors and I am in a dilema. My power head is still good so I am going to bolt my 1986 power head onto a 1993 midsection housing. Once I get the lower unit off, I will send it in to get the cavitaion plate fixed and then bolt in onto the new housing. That's my plan anyway. Wish me luck!!

Great news. I was able to get the power head off last night, here's the picture to prove it.

Then I was able to take the midsection housing off as well.

This afternoon at lunch, I took the midsection housing and lower unit to the local Yami shop and they managed to pry the two apart for me. My newer midsection unit and mount should be here on Monday. The shouldn't be any real reason I cannot be in the water by next weekend!!
