I am mounting a large tank under the raised RPS in the '77 Montauk project. The fuel line is going to run through the rigging tube back to the motor. This is hardly breaking new ground I know, but there's the problem of positioning the filter/ separator in the line. Where do most of you typically place yours?
I am using a Yamaha Mini-10, 10 micron canister type with a mount that accepts the inboard and outboard fuel hoses and can be mounted to a vertical surface with screws. Probably going to be on the inside of the transom somewhere.
Any ideas?
Grady

Grady -

Recommendation I have read include:

On the inboard side of the back wall of the splashwell
On the back edge of a Z leg
On the inside of the transom/gunnel (the corner) near the steering cable

My personal preference is under the engine bracket on the inside of the splashwell. While subject to some water, it is hidden and out of the way. Easy to change the cartridge.

Remember the primer bulb goes between the filter and the engine. Pfft

P.S. I have that same separator on my Outrage

Here is a photo of my Montauk. Note - the photo was taken a few weeks after I bought it and I had not cleaned it up yet. Most of the grime is grease from the tilt tube dripping down. Steersman nut solved that issue.

I have a Yamaha spin on filter and bracket. Mine is mounted near the transom hidden in my aft seating (Nauset).

OK CBO,
That's a possibility. Also, that is a good use for some basically dead space, which as you know, there is not much of on these little boats. I'll look at that in the AM. Inside a Z leg sounds interesting too. A little creative flexing of the fuel tubing and that might work.
Thanks for the photo, it helps a lot.
Grady
PS Good tip on the bulb placement as well!

Grady, just make sure you can get to it very easily and have room for some leverage if needed as over time it will become more and more dificult to loosen the spin off and you may need to really pull on it to change it.

I think its important to keep the water separator out of the weather, especially in a salt water environment. It doesn`t matter where in the fuel line it is mounted. Of course accessibility is important. The fuel bulb should be mounted close to the motor and in a vertical position, with the arrow pointed up toward the outboard.

I mounted mine on the outside of the splashwell. Easy to get to and for the most part out of the way.

I'll upload some photos tomorrow of the installation. I worked on it all day in the heat and right now, I'm just whipped! Mine went on the inside of the splashwell under the motor mount. For lack of a better solution, I drilled a 5/8" hole directly through the floor and into the center of the rigging tube. You'll see it better tomorrow.
Also made cooler cleats today in mahogany, reproduced the red/green light lenses and got them up and working. The cleat drawings are good but one needs to use them as a starting point, especially with respect to placing the toe pieces relative to the cooler. The actual angulation of that toe probably varies from boat to boat, so before you glue it, that should be checked and verified in place.
Long Day! The reward was to fill my new fuel tank, dunk the boat and take my wife out on the bay for a spin. Priceless!!

Ok, So this is an old thread, but for future people searching for information, I wanted to get this response attached as well to keep the thread a "One Search Wonder"

So i am about to mount a new Fuel/Water Separator Filter on the Outside of the Splashwell ('84 Montauk) as it will be under my Stern Seat and out of the way. My question is: What size Lag screws? I know from the Wood Locating diagram, there appears to be wood, so my assumption would be 1 1/4" Lags should do the trick? Assume 1/4 to 1/2 to be consumed by the brack which leaves 3/4 to 1" to go into the boat?
