Hi, new to the site. I am restoring a 15' that belonged to my cousin. The motor was stolen off of the boat a few months ago before I picked it up. I was wondering what the max hp is. It use to have a 70 evinrude. I was thinking of the going with a 70 Yamaha or 75 E-tec (if it will allow)

I think you may have a different model. There is a Montauk with a LOA of 16'7 and a 15' Sport.

Take a look at the reference section for your boat. http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...allery.php

I would guess you have a 15.

Pat,

Whaler only started making a 15 Montauk 2 years ago. If you are restoring it I doubt what you have is a 15 Montauk. It would wither be a 15' Sport Center Console or a converted Sport or Super Sport.

Here is a classic 15 Center Console.

Max HP on the classic 15' hulls was 70. Both of the motors you are looking at would be great on the hull. I would say though get a classic yamaha 2 stroke and not a 4 stroke as it will save on weight.

Without trying to be too anal....the new 15' Montauk is commonly referred to as a Montauk 150. Wink

With all the different versions of the same model and the newly designed models, it's hard to keep them straight.

Hello Pat0419 and welcome to WhalerCentral.

As Jeff and Phil mention, there is no Montauk 15 and never was.

Also, as Phil points out, there still isn't a Montauk 15 model.
Whaler recently has come out with a Montauk 150 which is a 15 foot model.

The classic 15 Whalers had a maximum HP rating of 70 which makes this model very fast.
Do you know what year your boat is?

Ok, I did some looking, It is the Classic. The sticker that has all the info on it is tore up and faded out. I can't make it out but the 15'. Thanks for the correction. Do you think the 75 E-tec would be to much or perfect?

Pat,

You might take a look at this weight guide we have on our site.
http://www.whalercentral.com/readarti...icle_id=77

The reason the E-Tec 75 weighs so much is it is basically the same as the 90hp only detuned.....

I would love to know the top speed of the 75 e-tec vss 60 e-tec on the 15 BW. With the weight difference it may be closer than you think. BG

Hi,

I have a '76 sport 15', I use an '04 Johnson "Plain Jane" 50 H.P., it has plenty of "Giddyaap", enough to get you on top of the "chop" and scare you (or make you grin). It's pretty quiet, pretty fast, and good on fuel, I feel that it's "Well Balanced" for the hull size.

Yea the weight is my biggest concern. My friend found a 50 Merc 4stroke. It's a great deal, but just not sure. I'm not a big Merc fan.

ioptfm, how does your boat run with the 60 etec?
