Do I need to go to the local Evinrude dealer (not too convenient for me) or can other places do this?

I think you need to get them from a dealer. There is a code on the key they will need.

No codes that I know of for OMC/BRP.

There is however a number on the key....
Example: 76, 77, 78, 79, etc.......

All you need to do is call your dealer and tell them the number on the key.
They can then send you out a new one.... or two......

I always keep a spare in my tow vehicle in case something happens. You never know...
Both my spare key and the key I use in the boat of course have the WhalerCentral keychain on them..... Cool

but...
My (lone) key is in one of those OMC rubber handle thingies (technical term) and I can't figure out how to get it out to read the number, any number, hidden within. Don't want to break or damage it with pliers...
This is like some kind of brain teaser puzzle!

jb,

The rubber cover comes off.
You can also buy new rubber covers.

Take a look at the BRP Online Parts Catalog. The catalog will show you the part numbers for the covers and the key numbers.

Jim,
Most locksmiths can cut the key for you. If it is one with the water resistant cap we(I'm a locksmith) usually don't stock them. We have the blanks that are like most door keys with a straight shank. Many we can cut from that key number which is the code.

Be advised that some key numbers are no longer available as the supplier discontinued them. In some cases, yoiu may have to buy a new switch assembly.

I was able to get spare keys for my Honda by looking up the part number at some online outboard parts supply houses. Cost me $4 each for a couple of spares.
