Me, the wife and my two kids are preparing for our annual trek to Sarasota/Siesta Key in mid April. In the past we have rented a pontoon boat or a 19' bowrider to cruise the ICW. Have only fiddled around fishing off the banks. We usually rent from the places by Stickney Pt Road.
Questions for you locals:
What might be some prime fishing areas on the ICW?
How should we rig? (we don't catch much up this way that have teeth)
Any recommendations on rental places? (any of them have Whalers!?)
Any way we get out into the Gulf? (aside from crowded or big money charters?)
i believe cannon's marine. north end of longboat key will the the only rental place that will let you venture into the gulf. i believe their rental fleet now is grady whites.
fishing? i'm a shallow water guy so my experience is limited to grass flats off the ringling mansion for trout and night fishing for snook in the canals. good luck and have fun.

Cannon's lets you go in the gulf I believe. There are a bunch of rental places in Bradenton as well that might. Where are you staying? We normally have a bunch of WHalers at Beercan on the weekends. Beercan is at the Longboat pass inlet(near Cannon's)
