Hi all,

I desperately need some help here. (Boat is located in Canada)

I'm going to get this boat on Wednesday, August 9, 2023

But I notice a few things that are making me nervous.

Would you please look at the photos, and let me know if you think it's a genuine BW or a fake?

I want to believe it's a true red dot, but I'm nervous about it, because of the SMIRK / SMIRKLESS shape, the console, and the shape of the cover for the bow storage, also the decal looks a bit too far forward ???

Please help as I only had 2 days now to decide. It's an all-day trip for me going to get the boat too.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I haven't asked for the HID or stencil, but I could do that if you think it's necessary or would prove anything.

(Trying to figure out how to upload photos)

I'll try and give a Google Drive Link instead.
Its not allowing the link to be clickable, so please copy and paste my link to your google top bar.

Tim,
That is a Cohasset model with an aftermarket seat.

When a Whaler has missing interior components or aftermarket seating/console, we call it a "Custom"

That is a 16' Custom.

For it to be a Montauk, it would need to have a fiberglass console and a reversable pilot seat made with a teak seatback and Z legs.

There was a single year on the 16' non-smerked hull, called a Montauk 16. After that it was on the 17' hull (smirked) and called a Montauk 17.

Either your buyer is trying to attract buyers to a not very popular model OR he does not know much about Boston Whalers.

The red dot hull, or workboat layup, in my mind, is not worth much more than a typical Whaler layup. If it was a Guardian with the different console and rails, thats a different situation entirely.

Since the console is covered, it's hard to tell what it is, but the boat hull is definitely 1973-1975. It is NOT an original Boston Whaler interior, and definitely NOT a 1984 Montauk, so be careful you don't pay too much. The engine cowling, with non-original decals, indicates 1996 or newer.

Basically, it's an old Whaler 16 whose previous owners cared little about keeping the boat as originally built. it's not a boat I'd ever consider buying. if you want a true Montauk, 1974-2000, I'd keep looking. 1977-1995 were it's best years in my opinion.

Finnegan,
The console is uncovered in a couple of the movies.
It is a Cohasset console from 1972-1973 with the exception of an added windshield.
See our article on Standard Center Consoles.
https://www.whalercentral.com/article...icle_id=58

Below is a shot of the console from his movie.

Thanks, Joe. I missed the movies.

My catalog collection from the 70's only shows the Cohasset as a 1973 MODEL year boat, which means they would have been manufactured and offered for sale 8/1/72 - 7/31/73. Is that correct? That would coincide with the change over to the Outrage gray exterior hull color and the Desert tan interior hull color. used up through 1982.

I have never seen an original white exterior/blue interior Cohasset?

So if this is correct, the boat in question would be a 1973 (model year) Cohasset?

The earliest "Hull Identification Number" (HIN) that we have on record of ALL hulls is October of 1972. (BWCA80041072)
That is from an Outrage 19 that srabb928 owns or owned.
https://www.whalercentral.com/article...icle_id=96

We have plenty of 1972 Cohasset models with Tan interior from many of our members.
https://www.whalercentral.com/article...cle_id=102

From the list above, the first Tan interior listed was a 1972 Bass Boat 16.
jespinosa was the owner with the stencil number of 3A5088
