I sent the following message to Whaler in January of this year.
"I want to specify a 150 Montauk to purchase. BUT your spec sheet lists models of the Raymarine AXIOM 7" MFD. (800x480 pixels, 1000 NITS) That unit has been substantially upgraded to the AXIOM 7+ 1024x600 pixels, 1500 NITS and wider viewing angles. How can I be sure I when I order my boat I get the updated model?" Not a peep in response.
Well the whaler will arrive next week, i ordered it w/o the MFD. So, I want to put on the Raymarine AXIOM 7+. Does anyone have experience with these? There are ~ equivalent Garmin and Simrad 7 inch units. I believe they behave much the same as the Raymarine.
I want to put on an AIS unit that will use a splitter to share a short antenna with a mounted VHF. I believe a NMEA 2000 backbone will be needed for this.
Any and all comments will be appreciated. In my present trawler I installed the VHF, the AIS, the Radar, the Autopilot and the stabilizer system electronics etc. So I can connect things and read manuals successfully. But tips are appreciated.
I have an Axiom 12. Raymarine uses their own SeaTalk NG for networking. My one complaint is the software updates can be frustrating. Otherwise it’s a nice unit. Fast and responsive screen. I’d imagine most modern brands will have similar functionality so if starting from scratch pick your favorite brand and go with it.
Thanks. I know of Raymarine's dedication to their sea talk interface. The + models list NMEA 2000, Blue Tooth and wireless communication with the MFD. There are likely limitations on Blue Tooth and wireless but they must have implemented a broad spectrum of NMEA 2000 capabilities. (I hope) I have been reading the manual and must do more. I wish I had an example to follow for the NMEA interfacing to their MFD. I will keep looking.
