Trying to cover the whaler and put the battery back in to tilt the engine back down...no power. changed the battery, still can't get any power to engine/tilt. made the same connections . bilge comes on, but no power to the be able to use the tilt on the engine or and other power. tried to bypass the cat. breaker, still no power.
Could possibly be a bad relay assembly in the tilt/trim electrical box. Had one go out on mine and now keep a spare. The relay looks like a square fuse on my 1986 Johnson 70 (part #34 below). There should be two and it's easy to swap them to see if that's the issue.
You can also use a mutlimeter while you're in there to see if there is continuity and current present at each of the contacts when you toggle the trim button.
I have a 1987 Mercury 2 stroke outboard that had a similar problem. I was able to use some jumper wires at the engine to confirm the pump was working and the motor would go up and down. I tracked my problem back to a broken wire in the rigging tunnel. After replacing the bad wire everything worked fine.
