I am in the process of installing an original bow chock / light assembly on my 1980 15 Sport which I am restoring. I have just finished installing a new original three piece rub rail and would like to know if anyone can tell me how to trim the rub rail, (aside from the hole which needs to be drilled for the wiring), in order to accommodate the bow chock assembly. Unfortunately my boat did not have the original rub rail or chock assembly installed when I bought it, so I do not have the old rub rail section from the bow to use as a pattern.
Any help or photos anyone is able to provide would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much in advance for your help!
You will need to shave or trim the top of the rubrail insert.
If you place the assembly on the boat you can observe how much material needs to be removed.
Mark the top of the insert to define the outer limit.
Take a less is more approach. Remove material, position assembly, view fit and how much and where material needs to be removed. Not the gap on the side of the assembly with the deck.
Only remove enought to get the assembly to fit.
Apply sealant (not adhesive) on the underside after you are done and have secured the assembly. Wipe off excess sealant.
I have installed them where I need to shave the black insert and some did not need to be shaved. If you have room to get the 2 bolts through the bow, no need to shave unless the glass will be too thin and not strong. I had a 15' sport that had the OEM bowlight installed but not the chock. I could not install the chock as no matter what I could shave the chock would not cover the hole of the old light, you are not unfortunate to have a virgin setup.
