2019 170 Montauk. The back lighting on the gauges goes on as soon as the key is turned on. Is this normal for them to be on at all times? On all of my other boats the back lighting would go on when the running lights were turned on. Do not see why they would need to be on in the daytime. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes.

It helps clear any condensation under the lenses (if analog).

There will be times you may be out in cloudy conditions and the backlighting will help.

The if a fuel sender, the fuel gauge should be on when you activate the key.

For fifty years Mercury has been setting up their branded gauges so the light is on when the ignition is "on". As mentioned, it keeps the gauge warm for condensation and corrosion control, which does happen, even with so called waterproof gauges. i have yet to ever have a bulb burn out, as they seem to last indefinitely. It is actually a very good feature and should be universally used.

It also simplifies wiring as no string of blue wiring is needed across the gauges and keeps the engine electrical circuits separate from the "house" electrical circuits. Only a short jumper needed on each gauge from the "I" terminal to the light terminal.

The light connection positive is a different connection than the gauge's actual ignition power for gauge function. Usually is a connection directly on the back of the light itself on the gauge. This is not the cause for digital gauges

Some people connect the lights on the gauge to the running lights switch along with the compass light and illuminated switches etc,. Some people just tie them to the ignition which is easier to connect up.
