I am working on my classic 1967 13' Whaler. One of the items I am trying to upgrade is the steering. All was going well until I ran into this issue. The curvature of the transom prevents the new cable steering from extending as much as needed.
Anyone dealt with this challenge yet?
I have a picture but I don't see how to post it...

You need a standoff bracket.
Some owners buy them, some fabricate their own.

Or purchase the standoff bracket that Phil mentions.

I just helped an owner with his project.
Take a look at this thread. Start at post #4.

Review member E_digg’s post and item list for assembling the bracket.
Here is Chuck's version of the bracket E did awhile back.

You can't use tilt tube cable mounting with that old Merc. The readily available transom mount that Phil mentions is the way to do it. This was probably originally installed by Whaler
anyway. You may even find the old mounting holes.
