Question, I recently purchased a 1966 Sport 13', the previous owner has the battery sitting under the center seat, said he preferred it there for weight distribution. However it is not in a battery box and I am not comfortable with that.
I saw somewhere that the proper location was behind the captains seat right in the center in front of the drain hole. Supposedly there is wood in that location to mount the battery box.
1. I see no signs (screw holes) in this location of the battery ever being mounted there.
2. When I look at the wood locating diagrams they do not show wood in that location.
There is nothing wrong with mounting the battery under the rearmost thwart except that it limits access and battery venting may damage the underside of the thwart. Installing an AGM battery should eliminate those problems. The battery should be contained in a battery box to eliminate the possibility of creating a short circuit between the positive and negative terminals and to protect it from the elements.
Thank you for the reply, are you aware if there actually IS wood located behind the rear thwart in the center, where the original manual suggests mounting the battery? the wood location schematics do not show wood in that location, I hate to screw in to the fiberglass and find nothing there.
