What kind of boat and size?

Year also may help.

Please try and follow the guidelines at the top of every page.

Check your battery condition and the condition of the battery cable connections at the battery and the engine. It's possible a weak battery or poor battery connection causes a low voltage condition when the engine is started.

Easy....Don't stare at the engine ;)

What engine would be a real plus. Most DFI's require a lot of battery at low speeds and start up which could be your problem.

Adding a relay or bigger wire might fix it... Usually flickering or flashing led's are low voltage condition. Don't forget to factor in the return trip of the wire to the switch when calculating your voltage drop.

The flickering might be caused by spiking/transient voltage by the starter. The starter can back lash up to a couple thousand volts momentarily through you boat. What type of boat (you mentioned cabin lights) so I guess you might have at least a couple batteries. One battery should be designated strictly as a starting battery. If solo battery you might put in a mechanical switch to severe he battery connection to all the house boat functions when boat starting. That spiking can toast the electronics. If multi batteries, look into the Blue Sea Battery Isolation Switches.
