Hello.

I have a 16' Katama hull that previously had a bow rail. Trying to use the existing thru-hull penetrations for the port and starboard stanchion stand-offs.

Also, trying to utilize a rail from a 1980 Montauk hull, but I think the port and starboard stanchions and stand-offs may have been different on the earlier hulls?

Any insight is appreciated and/or where I can purchase the correct stanchions?

Thanks,

Todd

P.S. I contacted Speciality Marine and they only said the bow stanchion was slightly longer (19-5/8") on the earlier hulls. Kind of strange, because when I cut a new longer bow stanchion, it seemed to work height wise with the Montauk port and starboard stanchions.

Todd:

You are correct in your observation that the bow rail for a 1980 Montauk 17 is different than a Katama 16 rail because the hull is different.

You will need to install new straight vertical stainless tubing on both the port and starboard stanchions. Contact CMI Marine, Weymouth, MA., where you can purchase new stainless pieces in order to modify the Montauk 17 rail to fit your Katama 16 model.

I checked and the information Specialty Marine provided you was incorrect. The bow vertical stainless rail is 18 5/8 inches long.

The port and starboard side vertical stainless rails are 25 inches long, with a slight bend forward at base and a slight bend backward at the top T-fitting.

Weatherly,

Thank you very much for the clarifications! That is a big help!

Do you happen to know the length of the original port and starboard stand-offs? As I may have mentioned, I'm trying to re-use the existing hole penetrations in the hull as well?

Thanks again,

Todd

Todd:

The bow rail port and starboard horizontal stanchions are 3 inches in length.

Todd: Have you seen the photographs of the stanchions posted on the website created by Smirkless? aka Ol Blue 66? Here is the link https://arcshark3d.wixsite.com/olblue66m/olblue66 You can see in the photograph the business card for CMI Marine.

It is very important to reinstall the stanchions at the exact location as the originals. Why? Because the 16 hull has specific wood backing locations. Sometimes you can actually see the wood backing locations on the hull in good light.

I saw a 1983 Montauk bow rail for $150 listed for sale on Facebook marketplace in Woodbine NJ.
