Hello,

I am a new Whaler Owner. I have a 21' 1975 Outrage with a 175 Johnson Power Strike. The boat is in need of a lot of TLC so when winter loses its grip I will be very busy. One thing I did was to remove the compartment doors from the center console and I have them in my wood shop for refinishing. The question I have is were the teak components oiled or did they have varnish on them from the factory? All the pieces are there but need refinishing as they have not had anything done to them in years. Personally I do not mind oiling the teak on a regular basis but I would like to stay to original as much as I can.

Thanks

There is a basic rule of thumb that applies to all classic Whalers. Mahogany was ALWAYS varnished (needs to be) and teak was ALWAYS left bare or oiled. Many. including myself, now varnish the teak also to avoid the endless "sand/oil" routine which eventually thins out the material. In the long run, varnishing is a lot less work unless the boat is kept in a garage all of the time.

Thanks for that. Now you have me wondering is the woodwork on a 1975 21 Outrage Teak or Mahogany?
