Hi, got a 13' Whaler and looking to install a rub rail. Got the boat with rub rail removed so I don't know what size it takes and also need to know what size screws are used to install the rail. Also what is the best place to look for these rails. What about your opinions on color, black rail w/ black inserts, white rail w/ black inserts or black rail w/ white inserts?

I used the one from specialty marine. Only downside is the rub rail is slighly thinner then the original. I used pop rivets to secure it. Having said that i had to almost double the about of rivets to make it look straight.

I bought mine from Nauset Marine on Cape Cod. Went with white rail with black insert and I really like the way it looks. I used pop rivets as well, about every 6" and added silicone to each hole to prevent water intrusion. The vinyl backing is pretty stiff, the guys at nauset marine gave me an awesome tip.

I drilled holes in the backing where I could later cut it off, and used ratchet straps to secure the vinyl rail at the stern...used the lifting eye and trailer as a secure point for the ratchet straps. I then started at the bow and worked towards the stern, using a heat gun and tightening the straps as I went. This really sped up the process and really helped keep the backing in place. Its real unruly, just be careful with the backing under tension...you definitely will want a second or even third set of hands to hold everything in place.

Good luck and take your time. As soon as you get frustrated or work too quickly is when something will go wrong.

Always helps to tell everyone what year the boat is you are working on as parts may vary from year to year.
