My steering lags and if in a hard sharp full turn at 2800 rpm, I virtually have to de-power to pull out of the turn and pull the steering back to neutral.
Am considering having my hydraulic (original) fluid replaced, but mechanic said it sounded like my 'power assist' was the problem. Thoughts on this? (as I was not aware of any power assist) or where cylinders are located.
He also mentioned it could be a problem with leaking seals (rams) but these are located (I believe) on the horizontal T bar that guides the motors (and where I recently had a shop attach the Auto Pilot). No evidence of leaking.
I'm willing to spend the money to correct (particularly if it eases steering) but don't want to get upsold without cause. Any advice is welcome.

Many newer large engines are installed with hydraulically assisted steering AND a power booster. The power booster pump is usually electrically driven. The electric power steering pump is usually mounted in the bilge near the transom.
If the batteries are not performing at rated capacity it often negatively affects the boat's steering. Ensure that your batteries are in good condition, of sufficient reserve capacity, and that all the connections are clean and tight. Look for leaks and/or excessive corrosion and ensure the fluid level is correct.
