1964 nauset 16ft
Good evening I have bought the above boat and , I have a 115 yamha yr 2011 ive repowered my whaler and have if bolted down. and would like to get insight on if a single cable mechanical steering would be sufficient , im leaning towards a dual cable system also for potential steering isues at high speeds.. steering will be ran through rigging tunnel into a aluminum console.over the front rigging port. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

I own the same hull 1964 and 1966 with a 70 yamaha 2-stroke and a 90 yamaha 2 stroke.
Both have Teleflex Big T helm and cable [single].
I had problems with the b1964 for years until I moved the console forward. The po had installed the aftermarket console 10" +- to the rear and it caused a tight bend the cable did not like.
My 18' Outrage has a 115 yamaha and has the dual cable steering. A 115 on a 16' is too much weight and way too much power. I do not use WOT with the 90 except for short bursts.
Mtown is correct. A Yamaha 115 weighs 414 lbs and is too much weight for a 1964 Boston Whaler 16 Nauset. The boat will display odd performance characteristics and basically be unsafe in the hands of a novice. You do not need a dual cable system. You will need to remove the outboard from the transom in order to install the mechanical cable into the tilt tube, then bolt the engine back onto the transom. The length of steering cable for a Nauset model was 17 feet. If you are converting your boat to a custom console set up you may require a different length. Look at the frequently asked questions section on this website for steering system recommendations.
