Hello,

I recently took my 1970 Katama 16 up the Hudson river to do the Kite Loop. It took 15 days. I slung a hummock up along the river most nights but some were spent in motels. It was a great trip. Total cost was about $2,800 with 1,100 being fuel and another $400 in oil for my 75hp 2 stroke mercury. I averaged about 3 miles per gallon. Single longest day was 200 miles from just north of Waterford to Jones Beach NY.

(Please do not promote or advertise your company business on Whaler Central)

I claim it is the longest trip ever but I am sure someone else has done a similar or greater distance. Can anyone beat 800 miles in 15 days or 200 miles in a single day? No cabin or Bimini.

Marc

“Longest trip ever”? Can you clarify what you mean by that. Do you mean longest trip in a Katama?

Folks have taken much longer boat trips than 800 miles. Some have gone around the world, multiple times.

There were some teenagers who took a small Whaler on a several thousand mile trip back in the ‘80s.

But yours sounds like a fun trip too. Nice work.

Take a look at the book entitled: "Only in America, An American Boating Adventure." Fellow Whaler Central member OIA, true name, John B. Mirassou, was the author. In 1987 John and three other buddies piloted their Boston Whaler Montauk 17 boat through Eastern waterways of America a distance of 6100 miles. They made the trip again years later.

Very cool. I just ordered the book and will revise my claim to longest 'single handed' trip.

Like I said, that was a neat trip you took in your Whaler - - well done!

But it’s still not clear to me what you are claiming when you say “longest single handed trip”? Others have taken MUCH longer single-handed trips in boats. Joshua Slocum sailed around the world solo over 100 years ago (with no engine and no modern navigation tools beyond compass, rudimentary clock, and sextant) before there was even a Panama Canal. Since then, there have been scores of people who have done the same.

So again, just trying to understand whether your claim is that you have made the “longest single handed trip” in a Katama or a Boston Whaler or????

He must mean Katama.
Hey I did 201 miles (174 NM) in one day sailing (no motor) and that was fast using wind-vane auto-pilot.
But beside these splitting hairs over titles I think the OP had a wonderful trip and adventure and I commend him on his trip and I would have loved to join him although not camping at my age.

Check out "3DSailor" and his completion of a boating adventure originating from New England and completing at Key West in 22 days aboard a Boston Whaler 16 Custom.
