Well I've been thinking about a whaler project but a full on resto might be more than I can handle right now. Instead I think I'll repair a few spots of gelcoat and replace the rub rail.
The boat is a 1966 16, and it has an old L shaped gunwale guard. Anyone know where I can get this L shaped rub wail. All of the ones I'm seeing do not overlap on the top.
Do you know how that single piece of L-shaped white vinyl is attached to the weld-line? Contact cement was used.
Take a look at Aaronm's personal page on this site. You will see a photograph of how Aaronm removed the single piece of white vinyl without releasing the cement (acetone can be used or a heat gun but not both at the same time.) More damage was done to the boat in the process of trying to do a repair.
You will see photographs of how Aaronm started grinding his hull. He ground a simple repair in the deck and made it huge. He ground out the weld-line and the photograph shows the aluminium biaxle cable used at the factory to bleed out the air from urethane foam curing. He thought it was a repair spot.
If you read his commentary he said the interior blue gelcoat was in good condition; but he ended up rhino-lining the original blue gelcoat.
Thanks weatherly I've decided to do a lot less to the boat than I originally thought. I bought some poly resin, cabosil, gelcoat and pigments to make some small repairs other than that I'm going to clean the boat up and see how shiny I can get the original gelcoat. I even might use a heat gun to pull the original rub rail in place if I can use it. It is still one piece. I'll have to find out what to attach it with.
I made the mistake of just ripping the old L-shaped rub rail off and it took some chuncks out of my gelcoat. Just filled with thickend epoxy, but it was a pain. And the three piece certainly does not cover all the old adhesive. Acetone does a nice job removing it...just wish I had done that first before slapping the new rub rail on...
