1978 Montauk 17
Im looking to purchase a new 12 gallon gas tank. Plastic.
Dimensions on the existing metal tanks are 12"H x 14"W x 19" L. Looking for a tank as close to those dimensions as possible.

Look at Moeller Gas tanks, something like this.

Too wide and too long. Looking for something that will fit in the tank pad that came on the boat. But thanks for the effort!
Anyone replaced the tanks on their Montauk 17 and find something that fits in the tank pads?

Sorry I generalized. Do a search here or just a general Google search gets you this Amazon.com : Moeller A/D 12-Gallon High Profile Portable Fuel Tank : Boat Fuel Tanks : Sports & Outdoors. ... Moeller 630013LP Portable Fuel Tank, 12 - Gallon, Red .... Arrived today at my 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with a 2 cycle 90 HP Johnson
You are not the first person looking for a Montauk 17 replacement tank, but you must search the Moeller web site or ask them for what you are looking for.
They have them available.

Mirax makes twin or single fuel tanks that will fit the mats.
See the photo on their page.

They are Whaler quality so not inexpensive. They will be the last tanks you will need to buy.

Using a prior Tempo design, Secpter makes a tank that fits the Whaler fuel tank mats.
The Moeller equivalent design may not stay in place so easily.
I would think you would need two for a Montauk.

On all of these new plastic tanks, be sure to replace the original cap with a vented one, or your tank will badly deform under pressure.

Indeed they are Phil..Sorry I did not see your link. It was the first name that came to mind when I read the post.
Your are correct - "They will be the last tanks you will need to buy."
I know some very happy Whalers that have been outfitted
with KSH / MIrax custom tanks.

Jvz, any idea on how much each D1212 cost from Mirax?

I bought 2 Mirax D1212 mirror image with handles last spring for around $250.00 each.
At first I thought it was a little high but Quality is always worth the extra money because you will only have to spend it once instead of buying a cheaper product and realizing that you should have bought quality the first time. I would stay away form plastic and the potential problems fuel can cause with that material.
