Bennett marine slt10 automatic trim tabs for 1968 16ft nauset

Have a 1968 16ft nauset. The original interior removed and fiberglass center console and flip flop cooler seat added. Its powered by a 2005 75hp evinrude etec. With it being very back heavy, it has a hard time planing on lower speeds. It does go
scarry fast. It does reach a plan on higher speed. I am going for more stability on lower speeds. Its hard to see crab pots..... with the bow being so high on lower speeds

Question is, Bennet marine makes the slt10 auto trim tabs for just this ocasion. It should compensate for 180lbs in the front which is what i need. Has anyone used these on their small whalers. They are 10 by 10.

At what position is the Evinrude E-Tec 75 outboard mounted? Is it at 3 holes up? What propeller are you using? I recommend you install a Viper 17 pitch. Raising the motor and installing a good stainless prop will improve hole shot, reduce drag, reduce draft, improve speed, and improve economy. Forget about installing trim tabs on your 1968 Boston Whaler 16 Custom.

It currently has a stainless viper on it. Need to look at the pitch of the motor but thought it looked good. A lot of the weight is in its ass. No problem with speed. Clocked at 42mph. Due to weight in transom it planes at high speed. Need to hammer down and taper back. Rough waters i would like not to throttle down so hard.

Any other advice
I already purchased the tabs but not installed. My buddy laying in the bow of the boat helped. He weighs 180. Would much rather not put holes below the water line on a 1968 boat.

Where is the outboard mounted? What hole are the top mounting bolts passing through on the top of the bracket? There are 4 possible mounting holes. What is your speed when reaching plane? What is your RPM reading at WOT? Do you know your hull weight? Any major repairs to the hull?

Bare hull weight. I beleive 800 lb aprox, 9 gallon tank in rear. 50 lb battery center console. About 950lb total. Viper prop on 2005 etec 75hp. Mods were mahogany center console removed and west marine center console added and moved center of boat. Flip flop coller seat stores only life vests and is 1 ft behind center console. Front of the boat is clear. No bow rails. Installed side rails with 4 rod holders. Through bolted cooler seat to attach a 4 rod rocket launcher total weight 25#. Need to check motor mount. At work though. Defanately stern heavy.

What top bolt holes are being used in the motor bracket? 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th

You say you don't want to drill holes below the waterline but you would have to drill many of them when putting on trim tabs.
Would much rather not put holes below the water line on a 1968 boat.


You might only have to drill 2 new holes and plug 2 older holes when mounting your motor properly and then not having to use trim tabs.

Going look at the mounting of the motor when i get home. I can mount the trim tabs if i need to. I like the boats layout. Its really open in the front making a nice jigging spot. Safe to walk around.

Turn radious and handling are great. Just hard plane between 4 and 13 mph.

The 16' hull will not reach a plane as low as 4-13 speed. 13 mph is normal for this hull/interior combination. My Montauk 17 and even my Outrage 17 can't maintain a plane under 13 mph.

Tabs are a bandaid.

With it being very back heavy


The engine is not particularly heavy for this hull. Where is the console and seat mounted in relation to the rear of the boat?

The center console is mounted more toward the middle. The original was definately more towards the bow. About 8 inches off. The etec is mounted on the top hole, all the way down and the tilt is on 3.

I am not doing the tabs. Ive herd nothing but problems with them. You all talkedlked me out of it.

I may give a hydrafoil a shot. My friends have used them and have had good results.

Thoughts. Have a feeling youre going to say my motors mounted wrong.

Foil is a different bandaid.

It may get you 1-2 mph lower planing speed but so would a good 4 bladed prop.

Moving the console/seat to original location will help and is DIY.

Why are you wanting to plane at such a low speed? A jon boat or Carolina Skiff are more adept to low planing speeds.

Engine height/prop selection affects all around performance and is a totally different conversation.

Eric: I recommend you raise your Evinrude E-Tec 75 outboard to the fourth mounting hole, that is also known as "three holes up." Your E-Tec 75 is mounted too low. You do not need a foil.

I agree with Weatherly as many others here will too.

Raise your motor ALL THE WAY UP.
Bolt in 4th hole from the top.

Drill the 2 "Green" holes in the diagram I gave you above.
Then fill the lower black holes in the diagram.
Done.

Eric: Also remove your static trim pin from the bracket. You do not need it.

It's been a while. I did what everyone pretty much said. The Newby needed to remove the pin. The motor wouldn't trim the whole way down. With a little more re configuring of the boat, runs great and flies. Thanks everyone for the help.
