Putting T-Top on 160 Dauntless???

Has any 160 Dauntless owners put any type of T-Top on their Boston Whaler???
I have an 2002 160 Dauntless and I noticed the gas tank is below the center council, and I was wondering if a T-Top would be stable under the center council? the fact that it's not a full piece floor pan, it has another fiberglass piece that covers the gas tank on the floor. Mahalo'z

I was told from the folks I purchased mine from, that one of their customers had one installed on their Dauntless 160, so I guess it has been done. The owner of Port Harbor Marine in Portland Maine mentioned it to me .

Thanks for the response, so I just purchased a 2002 160 Dauntless with a 90hp 2stroke Merck. I have a few questions about this Whaler the fact that you own one. Do you use your Dauntless in the open ocean? if so how does it perform in ocean chop? Do you know the actual weight of the Dauntless with motor without trailer? and what type of vehicle do you use to trailer the Dauntless? any problems trailering it? This is my very first boat and I have a family of five, Im mainly gonna use the boat for a little recreation with family and do a little bottom fishing with it. If you have anything else you wanna share about this Dauntless Boston Whaler your input would be greatly appreciated. Mahalo'z

The 160 Dauntless (Dauntless 16) is a great little boat. I owned one for about 10 years and have always regretted selling it.
The boat is a little under powered with a 90 HP engine. A 115 HP is superior for the hull. However, a 90 is certainly adequate for most uses if not optimum. Because the power is a bit low and the cockpit is tight I recommend against a T-Top.
The boat is a great bottom fishing boat and handles the open ocean well. Chop and braking waves require extra attention. You can't hurt the boat but the folks aboard can get exhausted holding on in really nasty seas. After all, it's only a 16 footer.
For family recreation with water toys, skis, etc you may want to use a propeller that provides some extra pulling power, probably a four blade. Propeller selection is part science, part luck and some intuition. You should start another thread for help with that.
I don't recall the weight of the hull and engine but you should be able to find a lot of information on that by searching the web or going to the BW web site. I would think a small truck such as a Taco or SUV like a RAV4 would get the towing job done but tow capacities for specific vehicles are easy to find.

With a new boat and as a first time owner, hold off making any major purchases till you have run the boat and gotten used to it.
The boat weighs 1500 lbs dry, without the motor.
With motor, fuel, equipment it's more like 2000. Add 500 for the trailer.
You want a vehicle that can tow at least 2500-3000 lbs.

Much Mahalo'z for the input and response. For some odd reason the shipping company Matson said they weighed my Whaler and said it was about 3.800 pounds. I researched as much as possible on the total weight on my Boat, motor, and trailer and the results came out to approximately 2,400 pounds, so Matson got me thinking a lot on how they got their weight numbers. Well I plan to weigh my trailer for registration purposes and also Ill weigh my boat on trailer and see what numbers I come out with. I just hope the shipping company didn't do the numbers different to charge me more, or I hope my boat, trailer, and motor isn't really 3,800 pounds because my max weigh to tow on my SUV is 4,000 pounds

The shipping company charges by the pound. See where I am going with this.
Even if the weight is 3,800 (which it's not) it is still more than fine to tow it with your 4k rated SUV.

If your Dauntless is container shipped they may be charging for the weight including container. I suspect that is the case.
However, as Phil wrote, you should be good for towing with 4K capacity.

I checked on the weight question with the manufacturers when I shipped my 2003 160 Dauntless from Ft. Lauderdale to Michigan, here’s how it breaks down:
• 2003 Boston Whaler 16 Dauntless, boat only – 1500 lbs dry weight
• 2003 Mercury 115 Four Stroke – 386 lbs
• 2003 Continental A1620 trailer – 522 lbs
• Approx. 40 gallons of gas @ 6.3 lbs per gallon - 252 lbs.
These number did not include the two batteries, bimini, covers, anchors, YETI 45 Tundra cooler empty (23lbs), etc. When the transporter weighed his load after adding my boat he figured it was just over 3,000 lbs. which probably was pretty close. Hope this helps.

I have another boat question, as a newbie boat owner. So if my boat, gear, motor, and Trailor weighs in at 3,800lbs is that normal???? Should I be any concerned if the hull is waterlogged??? My trailer on its title registration got it at a 1000lbs, the 90Merc is at 320lbs and boat hull is 1500lbs. Any of your info, input and experience is greatly appreciated

If the boat floats with the aft deck scuppers above water with one person aboard you do not have a water logged hull. In my experience with a brand new Dauntless the scuppers would go beneath the water enough for water to enter with about 300 pounds loaded behind the helm seat. That is, two people. The 160 Dauntless is notorious for this and it is normal.

Hi all - i have 2000 Dauntless 16' and purchased a Stryker t-top based on the installation video I saw on their website -I now realize that where the feet of the t-top sit on the deck -there's no backing. I've removed the middle floor panel in hopes that I could get to the under floor so I can add some backing - but discovered I still can't access port and stbd under floor areas to add backing.......anyone have any suggestions?

Which one is correct as sometimes different years can be Different?

it's a 2000, i'll update my profile. I got an email back from the t-top mfr this morning saying that if I bolt it to the deck, without backing, and using the 3M 5200 per their installation instructions AND attach the standoff anchors to the center console that it will be fine......thats the route I was going to take unless you have different recommendation? Thanks

This is a bit precarious of an install.
I would consider looking at adding backing plates UNDER the floor to spread the load. EDIT - To do this you will need to remove the console and lift the floor.
How far from the edge of the floor does the leg stand?
If me I would STRONGLY consider going with a bimini or a T-Topless

I would NOT use 5200 as a fastner.

The T-Topless is a nice solution like Phil mentioned.
If snorskyp's heart was set on a full T-top I would still not cut into the floor to get backing plates under it.
I would distribute the force over some wood planking running under each 2 of the legs (this could be fore-aft or sideways.
And then I would use 3M 5200 and a couple of well nuts (expansion) and SS bolts to secure the contraption to the deck.
