I have a 1988 Outrage 18 with captain seats. I am replacing them with a leaning post but have no reference to the fore/aft placement. I am asking for just one dimension - the clear distance between the vertical portion of the leaning post cushion and the bottom aft edge of the steering wheel. I would appreciate this dimension on the Outrage 18 as well as the larger models. Be sure to include the year so I can account for the different wheel mounting angles of the various console configurations. Thank you, Malcolm.

Hi Malcolm,
I have a 1986 Outrage 18 and am in the process of replacing my RPS with a leaning post. Birdsall Marine is building the post and they tell me the range is 12 -14" from the wheel to the cushion. Of course he mentioned it really depends on how large a guy I am. Is he talking about my beer gut? I am interested to see what some of the actual measurements might be from people with a leaning post already installed. I'll let you know how my install goes and what I end up with for that distance. I expect that all to happen before the end of January.

Thank's Marc. I did find just one post on this dimension under "Leaning Post Dimensions". The author claimed 12" clear on a 1990 outrage 18/19, however his signature claims a 1999. Regardless, the 12" seems about right. I will set it at a dimension comfortable to me. I am still interested in the clear dimension used by the factory as this will probably work well for me.

I wanted to use the OEM pedestal holes, which led me to the TODD slide=over. Not quite right for me so I took Tom W Clark's advise "Build what you want, pay the price , and be done with it" I designed and ordered an Arrigone Design with drawer.... I can't wait. Malcolm

I would have grabbed that measurement for you, but recently towed the boat out to the winter storage shed. Next time I check on it, I'll try to remember to get a measurement (probably not until after the holidays, though.)

But my boat is the 19 Outrage II (1992), so it might not be exactly applicable. It does have the leaning post, though.

One variable that you may not have accounted for, is the dish of the wheel. Some have more and some have less or even none. So a measurement from the lower edge of the wheel to the leaning post might not get you the same result from one boat to the next if the wheels have differnet amounts of dish. (Yes, the absolute distance will be the same, but the placement of the leaning post might vary.)

I will also say this: I am a fairly trim guy (no belly) and often wish there was a bit more space between the wheel and leaning post. It's fine while facing forward steering, but if I am passing through the gap moving from one side of the boat to the other, it's too tight. I am looking into a wheel with less dish.
