Newer style binnacle mount control for older Johnson?
I'm looking into the possibility of rigging up one of the newer style binnacle mount throttle controls (years 1996 and newer, I believe) to my 1983 90 hp Johnson that I have on my 17' Montauk of the same year. This particular model comes with the trim/tilt switch in the handle and also has the ignition. The part number for the particular control that I'm looking at on ebay is 0176372. I understand that this control uses 6 pin and 2 pin connectors. Is there a pigtail kit I can buy to convert the wiring harness from the Johnson to work with this binnacle mount control? Thanks.
You will be spending alot of money for such an upgrade.
You will need to purchase the OMC Johnson Evinrude adapter wiring harness, part number 0768411.
Binnacle 0176372 is a bad choice as a control upgrade; you will need to cut a big hole in your console to mount it because it is essentially a dual control base with a single lever.
I have installed the replacement top mount integrated trim and ignition binnacle, part number BRP 5006186, and have been satisfied with the operability.
I see what you mean by saving me the nuisance of having to cut a larger hole in the console. I see that the wiring harness is expensive, but wouldn't I need one for my 1983 Johnson even if I decided to go with the BRP 5006186? The BRP is considerably more expensive than the used 0176372 I am currently watching on ebay also.
