I have a Rage 15 with the 175 Merc (no grief please, I like the boat). The engine cover is lifted by two gas shocks and the ones in my boat were the 20 lbs size, but they don't hold the cover up. I got tired of propping it up with a piece of wood so I replaced them with new 20 lbs gas shocks, figuring the old ones were worn out. New shocks don't hold up the cover either.

I am thinking the previous owner replaced the shocks with a smaller size for some reason. He did some other screwy fixes, so this would be no surprise. I'd like to know what size shocks are on other Rage 15's. Can anyone with a Rage 15 tell me the markings on their gas shocks, assuming they hold their engine cover up?

Thanks

I've never seen that diagram before. Thanks, it should be handy. Any others on the site I can download?

Editing the shock info: My Rage has shocks that are 12" compressed and 20" extended, 20 lb. pressure and a very funky engine cover hinge setup that hides the hinge inside, under the engine cover. The cover doesn't flip all the way up, you get about 24" of clearance at the seat to reach in. For any real engine work you have take the cover off. My hinges appear to be stock, from the clean way they are bolted to the engine cover.

That diagram has what looks like a fairly standard butt hinge. Those would be great, allowing the cover to swing way up.

This expands my question a bit. Anyone with a 1997 Rage 15 that has butt hinges on the outside of the engine cover? Anyone with the hidden hinges like mine? Either way, what are the markings on your gas shocks.

Joe,
Missed that parts # note on the first read, thank you. I will try the 60 lbs shock from the sea ray. Interesting that they use the same parts number as Whaler.

I would love to see a picture of of a 1998 Rage 15 hinge assembly, if any owners could post one. It would be great to convert my cover to the butt hinge style and get a higher lift on the engine cover.

thanks.
