1966 13' Whaler. The boat sat for 15 years, got her out of a neighbors garage and had the motor running within an hour. I've only taken a few brief fishing trips, but on the last trip the steering cable ended up in a knot. Does anybody have a diagram for how to put the cable back on, and also looking for this part under the steering wheel since it broke at the bottom.
I know that a new cable is a must, but looking for some feedback on how to salvage the rest of the summer and getting this repaired.
Thanks all in advance.

HI, Keep an eye out on E-Bay as these old whaler wire spool steering systems show up every now and then and you'll be able to replace it. Some will say trash it and go for the Teleflex no- feed back system, all up to you and what the budget is. Find the center of the length of wire and mark it. Look at the drum and I believe , if memory serves, there is a slot that you can place the wire into making sure that the center mark you made is in the middle of the slot in the spool. One end of the spool winds one way and the other is the opposite way. Once you get the wire on the drum tape it so it wont unravel. The pulleys next to the console are off set, the bottom wire goes in the lower pulley and the top wire in the top pulley. Bring the wire to the transom and the bottom wire in the bottom pulley and it goes all the way to the port side , make sure that you bring the wire up from the bottom and back to the engine. do the next wire to the top pulley and to the engine and make your connections. KEEP the wires tight and straight. Should be a spring near the engine to hold tension on the wires at all times. Use good cable clamps and thimbles for the wire termination points. Remove tape from steering spool. Hope this helps, did mine as a teenager twice many many years ago!
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like even though I have the center of the wire ready to go where it came off the spool, I have to pull the wire out completely and start fresh. Not looking forward to this :(
