The wood from my casting platform on my 1974 Montauk needs replacing and I have an idea to make a 2 section main hatch. I am seeking comments on a idea I have to make a foot well for passengers. The idea here is to make seating in the bow as a cooler seat does not ride well with the casting platform.

Here is what I have - http://www.whalercentral.com/images/p...WC.jpg.jpg (I have this model of platform)

I would build two sections (one aft and one forward) that fit tightly to replace the main hatch. My thought is that I could remove the front section (at times) so two passengers could sit on the aft section and place their feet in the storage well...thus making a sort of bench.

I figure I am not the first one to have this idea so I thought I would seek comments/concerns/suggestions.

Thanks!

I like your idea! And if you can do it in a way that lets you put it all back to original without permanent modifications, all the better.

Maybe you could retain some nice storage under the new passenger seat, by mounting it with hinges to allow quick access under? That is one nice feature of the casting platform that I would not want to lose -- all the extra storage it offers.

Be sure to show us your results if you go forward with this.

If you take the entire center cover off, will an Igloo Cooler with cushion fit in the rear of the opening and on the floor of the boat?
48qt, 54qt, 72qt etc.

That way 2 passengers could sit on top of the cooler and you would also have a cooler.

No modifications necessary.

Thanks for the comments and ideas. I had not thought about a cooler in the well but I will measure to see if that could be done. Right now I have dual batteries in the main well, right at the base of the console..so I would have to move those. But I like thinking of all possibilities! cheers
