I've recently purchased a 1966 Nauset that has a flag pole base mounted top side inside the starboard side of the transom (pic attached). I'll be turning my own new flag pole because it's March & I'm anxious to work on the boat. :) A photo of the original would be great, if not a longshot.
Can anyone tell me how long the flag pole should be (36"?) & what size flag is correct for the hull size. Thanks.

Boat flag convention is fairly simple, but usually you see boats with flags that are too small according to the convention.

The length of the flag (horizonatal dimension) should be the next largest size in INCHES of the hull FOOT. For example, for a 16'-7" Nauset/Montauk hull, the 16" flag is too small (the boat IS longer than 16' even), and the 24" length should be used. Then, for the flag pole length, it has to be more than twice the length of the HEIGHT of the flag. For example, the height of a 24" flag is 16", so the pole should be 36". From a distance, the 36" height should show above the gunwale height.

I say this, becasue on my Montauk I use a Perko rail mount rod holder, on the very last
vertical stantion of the side rail, to hold the teak flag pole. Since the bottom of the rod holder is a foot below the gunwale height, I use a 48" flag pole, which shows 36" when seen from outside the boat.

Perfect & thanks so much. I'll turn the pole length at 32-36" long above the top of the transom. Sorry the picture did not come through before, but you are correct that it is 8" or so below the transom top line. I'll be sure to pick up a flag first.
