I decided to buy a used 1997 Dauntless 17 115 hp Merc 2 stroke. A marine mechanic recommends replacing the helm and steering cable. I want to try on my own. Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks

I am sure you will get direction here from some very knowledgable members who have done this more recently than I, but if I rember right, when I replaced the steering cable on my 13 foot sport, I googled "how to" for the teleflex no feedback steering system I was using and they had some great you tube videos detailing the installation.
Its one thing to be talked thru the installation, but quite another when you actually see someone doing it. I believe the hardest part for me was removing the steering wheel on a 25 year old boat that had been left outside quite alot. It was difficult even when using a steering wheel or "pulley" puller, but I hear my problem with it is not the norm. You will also have to contend with getting the old cable out and new one in thru your rigging tunnel. My installation had the steering cable running down the inner side of the boat to the side console which is maybe why I thought the installatin was so simple. Anyway, it should be a very do able do it yourself project. Good luck.

It is not that complicated. It can be tough getting the rod out that goes through the motor tube as that gets a lot of salt spray. The one thing I would consider is adding a piece of flexible plumbing water pipe as a chase through the tunnel. It helps prevent the new cable from ripping out any wires and smaller stuff that is run there.

Thanks. The first challenge I see is taking the rod out. The transom seems too tight, not even a trolling motor can be clamped. There is a "play" on the steering but not alarming enough to rush the project.

Another is what length and brand is recommended. Thanks
