Newb here with my first post. I searched, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I'm also really glad there is new hosting, I was getting frustrated the last few months when the site would only work intermittently.

On to the question: I am trying to find out if there is a size difference between the RPS on the Dauntless and the Montauk.

In short, I need a larger fuel tank to avoid buying fuel in Catalina ($$$). I have found several topside Moeller tanks (Part number 031626 $ 031626RB specifically) that are stated to fit the Montauk RPS. I also found this thread:http://www.whalercentral.com/userphot...hoto_id=54 where a Whaler Central member put a Moeller 20 gal (part 031620) under their Dauntless 15 seat.

I also have a Dauntless 15, but I would rather have a main tank with more than 18 gallons. I always carry a 5 gal jerry can as a reserve, but I'd rather have more than I think I need.

It looks like the Montauk tank will stick out a bit from the back of the Dauntless RPS, making the fill spout easily accessible without removing the seat cushion. Anyone have any input? Does the Moeller tank also stick out from the back of the Montauk?

Loving the Dauntless so far. Much better for dropping lobster nets and trolling than the 34' Chaparral.

Thanks.

Hello CA417PC, what model year is your Dauntless 15? I'm a bit confused, did you say your Dauntless has a RPS for a helm seat?

My 1996 Dauntless 15 has a factory B/W color matched fiberglass fuel tank enclosure with a thickly padded helm seat. The padded stainless steel back rest moves forward and aft and the rear of the enclosure is open.

Some short years ago I replaced the OEM Pate fiberglass 15 gal tank with a Moeller Marine (red plastic) 18 gallon model. If was a great fit (see my project album) after hardware install.

Hope this help...
Angel M.

I have a 1998. It looks like we have the same seat. Isn't that the RPS? (Reversible Pilot Seat). I have a link to your album in the original post, I really like all the detail you had of the install. I was just hoping for more fuel capacity. Right now I have a 12 gallon plastic tank, which is original to the boat. I am hoping I can fit the white Montauk tank (22 gallon) even if it sticks out a little.

I may just have to be the guinea pig and post a lot of pictures.

Looks like both of you have the "Reversible Pilot Seat".

The 13' and 15 came standard with a bench seat at least in 1996.

Hello Joe, hope all has been well with you. I was under the impression that a true B/W RPS helm seat/bench incorporated the highly prized "Z" Leg stantions. One's never to old to learn something new!!!

CA417PC, the main issue that I see with fitting a larger (than 18 gallon) fuel tank is the opening at the rear of our helm seat housing. I had just enough room to pre-install the deck-to-tank hardware, then the tank, and finally lower the housing down around and over the tank assembly. Then secure the housing to it's factory Aluminum "L" brackets to complete the project.

I get good travel distance with my 18 gallon capacity and I have a Yamaha 90 2 stroke on my Dauntless. Does your boating activities require more fuel capacity?

All the best,
Angel M.

Yep, doing good Angel. Hope everything is well with you too.

Apparently it can be anything Boston Whaler wants to call it.

There are several different kinds of RPS seats with different flip/flop backs that are all called RPS.
Even my prior 1997 Outrage 17' had a different RPS then yours.

See the 1996 catalog on your model and you will see Whaler called it an RPS for Reversible Pilot Seat optional.

I just go by the genuine Boston Whaler Catalogs.
That way I stay out of trouble and people can't complain to me. :-)

Angel and Joe-
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
As far as the 20 gal tank:
That's good to know. I'm going to have to take some more measurements and see how much room I have.

Right now, my tank is secured by a strap. Because I didn't have the Pate tank from the factory, I think my existing setup is a bit different. I thought I could simply put in a longer, and possibly a second strap to secure a larger tank.

It's about 25 miles to Catalina, depending on where I leave from. I can make the crossing in an hour in calm water. I get pretty good mileage with the Johnson 70, but if I get caught in some swell, the trip could take much longer and require extra fuel. Inside the bay I get 5mpg on light throttle, but open water is going to be less. I'm going to go up the coast this weekend and see what my consumption is like.

I'm just looking for some extra fuel capacity without a bunch of fuel cans taking up space in the back. If I can only get 18gal, it's better than 12. But I'd rather get more if possible.

I have also seen many of different seats raised to accommodate for taller fuel tanks.

Obviously not wider because they need to fit width wise but like you mentioned, could be a little deeper front to back and hang out slightly to the rear.

Another possibility for extending range is a portable fuel bladder. The advantage over fuel jugs is you can use up the bladder first, then roll it up and stow it away.

This might be a better approach than shoe-horning an oversized fixed tank under the RPS. If you go the route of the oversized tank, you will always have it there taking up space even when you don't need the extra range.

Or you could gat an Outrage 18/19 with serious tankage!!

I just installed a Moeller 031626 22-gallon tank on my Dauntless.
It's perfect. I doubled my fuel capacity, and now the tank is easier to fill.
I put pictures on my personal page if you want to check it out.

Not sure when it will be approved for viewing.

Glad to hear you solved the fuel capacity issue CA417PC. I went to "members personal page" but could not locate you to see pictures? Are you in the "15 Foot Whaler" (Dauntless) section?

Best,
Angel M.
