2006/7 270 Outrage w/Lewmar Windless. Motor needs replacing and it is in an awful place to get too. Anyone here replaced the motor? Any tips on how too? I can barely get my head into the rope locker to see what I need to get at? (2) Aft deck behind helm flexing badly. Stress cracks appearing at two points where leaning post meet the deck. Solid center piece from helm to back flip down seat. Is this something that can be ordered or, have a local match up and make?

Thanks,
Bill

My Lewmar is held in place with 3 bolts that come down from the main body into the anchor locker. No top side access to the bolts and you have to remove the three nuts from beneath. The whole unit then pops out from above. I salvaged mine off a "parts" boat and it was missing a gasket as well as a backing plate inside the locker. There are a couple of allen headed bolts holding in the motor that are far tougher to get at than the mounting bolts.

The cracks are may be from too tight a hole when drilling in the screws. Spectrum Color (a sponsor) should have a matching color. I find I get far less gel coat cracking and chipping from drilling when using a masonry bit through the gel coating and switching to standard bit.

Thank you for the reply Garris. Is your boat an Outrage? Like I said, the only wat toget to it would be blind and with one hand? The top stanless piece doesn't need to be moved. As I see it, everything I have that needs replacing will have to come through the anchor/rode locker.

Bill,
I have a 1979 22' Revenge with great access. If I had to replace the motor with my good access I would remove the anchor winch and do it on a bench. The three bolts that hold it down are extended quite a bit and you can feel them. I am not sure of the socket size but a deep socket should allow you to "blindly" remove the three nuts (I believe they are lock nuts). The bolts might be too long for the socket but an open end wrench should work until you get down enough of the thread to use the socket. A doable but annoying job. I had a British JCB tractor once where I had to cut two closed end wrenches (because they were slightly different) and swap them out every 1/16th of a turn until my fingers could get to the loosened nut. I generally rate "blind" removals by bloody knuckles and curses dropping tools and hardware.

Garris

Edit: the bolts are locked in place so no need to cinch the top.

Most informative Garris. I understand the 'bloody knuckle' part too! My fishbox macerators gave me permanent indentions! Thanks for the reply!
