I would like to install a mercury-type control, so no shifting is necessary. Has anyone done this and how difficult is the job?

Teleflex and other companies make "universal" controls. As Joe states, you just need the correct adapter for the shift/throttle cables to connect to the throttle.
Your existing shift/throttle cables already have the adapters for the engine end.
While the BPR throttle/shift controls are great, some members like the "classic" look/feel of the Teleflex/Morse control. Many dealers installed them back in the day when the engines were not factory installed.
I had a Teleflex control that came with a boat I took the E-tec motor off of. The adapting to the cables was awkward. I had to grind a very thin pin off that held the end of the throttle cable (it had a locking compression washer holding the end of the pin). I ended up purchasing the matching OMC control. Simple install and easy access if I have to replace the cables.

For Cestes, or anyone else interested. I would sell the old Teleflex binnacle control with an OMC harness for $100 plus shipping.
