I just bought a Nauset mahogany center console from Specialty Marine. I bought the kit and I have already assembled the console and seat and I am ready to start putting on the varnish. Per Specialty Marine they recommend just putting on 5 coats of Z-Spar Captains Varnish. I was looking to see if someone has bought this console before and if they just did the varnish. The solid pieces of mahogany and the veneer are extremely different colors and I am afraid that it will look weird once varnished. Looking for some advice and maybe pictures of someone's project, especially from Specialty Marine. Thanks.
I purchased the completed console and the colors of the solid wood versus the plywood are fine. No significant variation between the pieces. They should darken up once you apply the varnish. You may want to test the various woods in an inconspicuous area, such as inside the console cabinet where a variation would be less obvious before you do the outside area.
