railing bases

I have some of the base fittings on my railings for my 25 outrage that are in bad shape. I called specialty marine, and they couldn't help me. Anyone know if the can be procured, and are they of a good quality stainless?

I replaced all my rail bases and rail tees with fittings from Seadog. They have double set screws verses Whalers screws with a plastic washer. I've had these fittings installed for fours now and they do not rattle one bit. The rail is rock solid.

Isn't Sea-Dog Wholesale. Bases and Tees have to be ordered 10 at a time.
If you want OEM Sue at Twin Cities Marine or Shaun at CMI Marine.

To buy directly from Seadog you might have to buy as a retailer but I bought mine on-line from a retailer.

Martin Marine Design, a site sponsor here, may be able to assist. They supplied me replacement rail bases for my 13-foot Whaler which were much nicer than the original items.

Duf, the rail bases on your boat are slightly unique to Whalers. While you can go buy a replacement 60 degree stanchion base in stainless steel or chrome pated brass just about anywhere, they may, or may not, match up to the holes in your hull.
The Whaler bases you have are unusual in that they use larger mounting screws for added strength and use the Whaler-style set screws.
I honestly think you would be batter off simply having them re-plated. It will cost less and end up being better than new.

Sea-Dog is a manufacturer, just like Perko is a manufacturer.
You can Sea-Dog hardware at all sorts of chandleries and online vendors. You do not have to buy directly from them. Here in Seattle both Fisheries Supply and West Marine both carry Sea-Dog hardware, including rail bases.

Tom, I didn't realize they were plated. thought they were plain stainless steel. Absolutely, if I can have them re-plated/refinished, I much rather keep the originals.

Duf, I am reinstalling my railings with the original bases. The old screw's plastic was tired/non existent on the screws. Just got a bag of new screws from CMI Marine Products, factory original.

Yes, they are chrome plated bronze and the original chrome plating didn't always stick very well and then the chrome would flake off and the bronze base would patina, eventually turning green.
I have an excellent plating shop here in Seattle I have used for years. When they re-plate old Whaler hardware, it typically looks BETTER than the original was when new.
I'd figure about $10-$15 each to re-plate those bases.

I haven't seen any replacement SS rail bases that have the same hole layout as the originals had.

So, replacing the originals would also mean drilling some new holes and filling old ones.

Joes right about the hole layout. I installed the SS Sea Dogs on my 25. I took advantage of the holes for the old bases and soaked them with Git Rot before filing them.. I also put Git Rot into the holes for the new bases before installing them. The Git Rot will turn the wood into a harder product that seems to hold screws very well. I used 5200 under each new base to seal the screw holes and for additional holding power. The Sea Dogs stainless will blush a little surface rust around salt water, a little wax once in a while will keep this under control.

bcoastal, I replied to your e-mail and re-inspected my railing bases. I have 4 that are in pretty sad shape, and I haven't been able to clean them up. If there in excellent shape would be interested. If not will follow Tom's advice and get the address to ship to and have them replated.
