1966 Nauset 16 that I am restoring, any secrets on how to clean up highly oxidized chrome pieces on side railing parts. Don't want the expense of re-chroming pieces or purchasing new railing. any suggestions appreciated.

I've used Noxon on many different kinds of metals, available at most grocery and hardware stores...works well. You can also try Woody's Wax, which seems to work on almost all boat surfaces but is probably only available at a marine/boat supplier.

I've used Never Dull on mine. it will remove surface corrosion from stainless steel rails too. Takes a lot of elbow grease but it works. Begin forwarded message:
I winter in Ft. Myers and summer in St. Joseph, Michigan. It’s now about 12 years since I’ve joined this group. I gave my 1972 whaler to my daughter and sold the 17’. Bought an O’Day 28 sailboat and sailed on Lake Michigan. Yesterday I bought a 2005 130 Sport. |

The railings are made of stainless steel and are not chrome plated.
The Tee fittings used in 1966 were chrome plated zinc and they tended to become pretty corroded and pitted with time. Not much to be done with them.
Later Tee fitting were made of chrome plated bronze and these can be re-chromed for about $10 apiece.

On your stainless pieces you can also use a buffing wheel and either rubbing compound or ruse sticks.

Bar Keepers Friend works great. Many stores and web-sites carry it. Here's an Amazon url..http://www.amazon.com/Bar-Keepers-Fri...nd+cleaner
Also, keep your old tooth brushes. They assist greatly in the areas where screws are and where the rails meet the gelcoat.

Routine maintenance keeps the rust away.
FLITZ Polish - liquid or paste.
Never Dull + old fashioned cotton diapers
WD-40 Specialist - rust remover.
