I have a 1984 Montauk and am in the process of installing the Moeller 22 gallon fuel tank below the RPS. I want to secure it with 2" wide straps through SS footman loops (not Moeller kit) and would like to know what type and length (how far into deck) of screws would be best for attaching them to the deck. I believe the screws need to go through the fiberglass and into but not through the 1/2" plywood so I'm thinking 3/4". I intend to bed the screws with 4200. Comments would be appreciated.
The plywood is 1/2" thick but it is OK to go completely through it, in fact you gain maximum strength with a sheet metal screw if you do, you just don't want much more than the tip of the screw protruding though it.
Is it better to install a Moeller tank with a tie down kit or a permanent kit? I just bought a 22 gallon moeller tank for my 1985 Montauk 17 and I'm trying to decide between the two kits.
