I am replacing the hoses on my Sea Star hydraulic steering system. It looks as though the helm pump is mucky inside and obvious that different fluids had been used in system. Is there a method on cleaning/flushing the helm pump and also the single cylinder at the motors? Once done I would replace with new Sea Star steering fluid. If there are no leaks in the system is there any need for rebuilding or replacing any gaskets or seals on either the helm pump or cylinder? Thanks.
Well as long as the system is open and all fluid gone might as well put new seals on the cylinder and "o"ring on the bleeder valves. Not hard to do, just a little more money. As far as the helm unit you could probably do a flush with Sea Star oil through the fill/vent plug, however ,I would ask Teleflex tech department as to such.
