I have been thinking about adding a bow rail to my early 70's 13 footer to make it a little safer for my grandchildren. Someone locally is selling one for a decent price. However the railing they are selling has four external mounting plates. So it mounts as follows: four horizontal mounts on the inside of the hull, bolts go through the side hull and into the four SS plates that are threaded kind of like a tee nut. Sounds very strong ( good ) but I don't recall them being mounted like this. It does have a center vertical post that mounts by the norman pin and two " feet " at the ends that mount to the horizontal lip where the seat board sits. This does not look ( from pics ) like some rube goldberg setup it looks like a clean factory railing. So is this how they normally mount ? Or has anyone seen them mounted like this ? The seller states it was removed from a 13 ' Whaler and the pic in the add has it mounted in a Whaler. Asking price is $175.00 for everything and it looks like the railing/fittings are in great shape not bent or pitted.

That description sounds like original equipment.

I went and looked at the railing yesterday, it was in very good shape and I purchased it for $150.00 I'm happy with it. The brackets that go on the outside of the hull are slightly bowed so I will straighten them out and lay down a coat of primer and topcoat on them. Looking forward to installing it will be a winter project. I think I'll make some gaskets to go under all the fittings that touch the hull.

This purchase gets more interesting. Today I wanted to clean up the brackets that mount on the outside of the hull. I thought I would run them across my wire wheel on my bench grinder and then prime/paint. I started cleaning up the first bracket and thought " what is this metal " ? I cleaned all four brackets and they are made of what looks to be pewter ! They are just beautiful and WAY too nice to be painted. I thought they were either plain steel or maybe stainless. These cleaned up so nice I sprayed several coats of high gloss clear to preserve the pewter color. These will look like jewelry on the outside of my white hull.

The brackets are chrome plated bronze.

No chrome has ever been on these brackets. They may be bronze but they sure look like pewter to me.
