Hey Guys,
I need to install a pair of transom lifting rings on a 22' outrage with twins and a Whaler drive. It seems that
there is some fiberglass reinforcement right in the corners of the transom thereby reducing the available area to mount hardware flush. If I mount them flush on a part of the transom that is flat they will be approximately 12" from the corner... Are they to close together ? I don't think it's a good install if I were to go through the curved part of the corner. Also what kind and size should I use.
I bought my full transom Outrage 25 new in 1989, and the factory gave me stern lifting eye instructions directly.
You want to use either 1/2", or even better, 5/8" SS through bolted U-bolts for lifting. I used 5/8". They MUST be mounted through the plywood re-inforced area of the transom, in the upper corner area and angled in at the top to accomodate the "Y" harness typically used for lifting. A 4" x 4" x 1/4" aluminum backer plate on the inside is also a good idea, as there is a LOT of load placed on each of these when the boat is being lifted. This is also what you need for towing, either recreational, or for towing another boat.
You can see the factory recommended installation here:
I have never had to have my boat lifted, but looking at the installation in retrospect, I would now move them in maybe 2" more, and down 2" also so that they are well placed in the transom plywood. They are highly stressed when the boat is lifted.
I have seen a stern lifting eye fail, and it is not a pretty sight.
