Helping a friend clean up a 15' super sport 1988. We removed the interior and bow rails so that we can strip the bottom to a realistic waterline etc..

It's temping to not reinstall the bow rail because the boat has such awesome lines. Has anyone lowered the rails so that they are there but much lower. Ie... Cut 6" off each vertical piece and make them less awkward but still have something to grab onto if needed.

As always, your input is greatly appreciated.

Stephen.

If you cut off 6 inches of a Super Sport rail, that doesn't leave much left.

Are you referring maybe to a Sport model instead of the Super Sport?

I agree that the Whalers without rails look great! My 1986 Outrage 18 didn't have them, and I think it looks better than if it did, and fish can be easily worked over the gunnels and bow without rail interference. The rails were optional safety equipment, and they are good for the safety of passengers who ride in the bow area of the boat while it's underway, but if you don't plan on having guests up there, I don't see why you really need them. I have a bow area fishing post where I can sit and cast to fish while trolling around the lakes around here, and estuaries on the coast, and easily work most fish into the boat in the bow area without those rails interfering.

Stephen, i think i understand - you want to go for an ultra low profile rail similar to some larger center consols i.e. a sea craft etc. interesting idea, but i think if i were you i would keep the rails as is. Im a big fan of super sport rails

Exactly. I personally think they look dated. Not going to have toddlers running around up front but still need something to hold onto. I'll keep u guys posted. Thanks for the input.

Sorry Joe. Yes it's a 15' super sport just like the pictures of the boat in the link you provided.

OK.

I have never heard of anyone wanting to cut down that already low rail.
First time for everything.

I can understand why people have cut down the standard Sport rail as it is very high.

I did same thing, I had plans to have a custom low-profile rail made, and decided against rails entirely. Instead I installed pop-up cleats to hold on to.
