Folks - I recently acquired a 1998 Conquest 21. Love it. But it needs TLC. Two things to start with:

Does anyone here have a recommendation for a vendor of solid, reasonably priced canvas? We live in Northern Virginia, if location matters. The boat has a bimini, but I'd like to add isinglass front and sides to make late season boating more comfortable. Canvas maker suggestions would be very welcome.

Also, my Yamaha gauges are sun-faded and difficult to read. I'd like to replace with gauges that show fuel rate of consumption and other operating data, not just the basics of fuel level, RPM, etc. I'd welcome advice on upgrading gauges. 2001 Yamaha 225 (only 360 hours, and clean as a whistle).

Thank you. I appreciate your time and thoughts.

Tom

As far canvas, all I can suggest is Mills.

Do you have the Yamaha Multi Function Gauges? or single gauges?
See the bottom 2 Multi Function gauges on this page:

Thank you, Joe. I appreciate the tips. Now I'm in search of replacement seat cushions. Seems like the Conquest has fewer parts vendors than other models.

The OEM for this model's canvas was Great Lakes Boat Top Co. of Vonore, TN.

The cushion OEM was PUI in Titusville, Florida, but they are no longer in business.

Sometimes, you are better off with a local canvas maker and they can tailor to your desires.

Tom,

What Yamaha gauges do you have now as you didn't answer that?
Multi Function or single?

If the Bimini is Mills, then I would go with them for canvas, otherwise try Coachcraft Upholstery in Fredricksburg 540-286-3044. They did the canvas on a friends Whaler

Thank you for the advice. I'm just figuring out who to go to for parts for our Conquest. It's a new boat to us, and I'm just pulling together the network of folks who can help us restore it.

Joe -- The gauges are multifunction style. Two round gauges. Probably original with the 2002 Yamaha 225. They don't offer fuel consumption rate information, but do have speed, tach, fuel, tilt, time of trip, and total hours. Not bad design, but pretty bleached out by the sun and a bit hard to read.

It shows Fuel Gallons Per Hour in the photo link I gave you above.
Is that not consumption?

Mine does not offer that option. The gauge is configured just a little different than the ones shown on the web site. I'm assuming it's an older version on my boat. I suppose Yamaha will have to tell me whether the new version of the gauge is compatible with my motor, in the sense that there is a sensor reading rate of fuel consumption in the motor itself, so that the info can display on the gauge. With fuel injection, that would seem likely, right?

Joe -- The gauges I've got are very similar to the two round ones (Digital Multifunction ProSeriesII) at the bottom of the web page you sent me. Not identical to those, but quite close.

All -- Thank you for your time and advice. My wife and I are realizing a dream by having a Whaler, and raising our son to share that dream. It's wonderful to be able to get advice from real pros. Thanks for this site and your consideration.

Tom,

Let us know what you find out about the gauges.
It would be nice to have the GPH burn if all you have to do is purchase a newer Multi Function gauge.

Consider calling Andy at Sim Yamaha. They are great for OEM parts.

If you don’t mind a little road trip call Jack at Boat Cover, Inc. 410-827-7474 on Kent Island, MD. He and his son do incredible work at very reasonable prices (they just replaced all my glass and it looks fantastic). While there you could have the great folks at Whalertowne replace your gauges, do any other things on your “to-do“ list. I believe Nick in the service department is Yamaha certified. Actually, Boat Covers is across from Whalertowne and Jack is frequently over there measuring/installing while boats are there for service, etc.

Folks -- I've now replaced the original Pro Series II gauges for my Yamaha 225. I replaced exactly the same items, and it was fairly simple to swap out the gauges. I had hoped to install Yamaha's multifunction gauge that measures, among other things, fuel rate consumption, but the folks at SIM Yamaha indicated it wouldn't work because my 2002 engine lack the internal sensors to give the rate. So I added a Garmin fuel sensor and hooked it up to my Garmin GPS 741x, via a NMEA 2000 network and it works perfectly. Now I can tweak my RPMs to optimize speed and fuel. I made the progress on this project with help from the WC community and offer my thanks to everyone who weighed in.
